susanreads: my avatar, a white woman with brown hair and glasses (Default)

I've seen a lot of posts referencing this meme, but I was never going to get around to posting every day, and there are questions I can't, or don't want to, answer. So here's a selection:

1. Why did you sign up for Dreamwidth?

To quote a post I made when I started,
I need a better way of keeping track of the conversation.

Meanwhile, the people I've started reading were waxing enthusiastic about Dreamwidth. I followed links.
The diversity statement. (Shinyyyyyyy)
Essays about why advertising on social media is doomed, plus a business plan for making the site profitable without third-party advertising. (Oo! Oo! I want! ... AdBlock Plus is my friend, but it doesn't work on public terminals that only use Internet Exploder)
Staff who talk to people and answer questions. (It's like phoning a company and being answered by a human instead of a computer!)
Separating reading lists from access permissions. (I never got my head around "friends" in the LJ sense. I have friends. "What I want to read" is not the same.)

And, and the longer I lurked around here the more I liked it. So, through the magic of OpenID and launch night invite codes, here I am.

2. Why did you choose your journal name?

I didn't think I'd get just "Susan" (maybe I should have tried!), and I wanted something that would be
  • more me than a random number,
  • easy to pronounce, and
  • easy to parse, without using underscores (which are awkward to type).
Reading is my default activity, so.

3. Do you crosspost? Why or why not?

No: I don't have anywhere to crosspost to. This is my first journal, and I plan on staying here.

4. What do you do online when you're not on DW?

Read things I follow by RSS and Google Reader. Fail to catch up with links I've bookmarked to follow later. Games: currently Gemquest chapter 0. Look for work, but I'm not thinking about that today.

5. How about when you're not on the computer?

I read, watch TV and listen to the radio; I do have a social life, but it's intermittent; fail to keep up with shopping and housework. Oh, and there's that darn looking-for-work again.

6. What do you wish people who read your journal knew about you?

I rarely-to-never do virtual hugs, because I associate the word with something I avoid (don't touch my back unless we both know what you're doing with it).

I lurk a lot, because I'm not good at social conversation. I can spend quite some time deciding what to say in a comment, and then not post it after all, because I can't get it right. I'm also not-very-good at time management, and often so far behind that a conversation has gone cold by the time I get to it.

I like getting comments (usually), but don't often reply. It's not you, it's me not knowing what to say again. People talking to each other in my comments is squee-worthy!

Since writing the bio in my profile, I've started identifying both as disabled and as asexual. Perhaps I should update it sometime.

7. What is your favorite community on Dreamwidth?

How can I pick just one? [community profile] doctorwho is fun at the moment, but I might change my mind tomorrow!

8. What community do you wish was more active?
9. Are there two people on your reading list that you think should meet?
10. Tell me about your default icon.
11. What features do you think Dreamwidth should have that it doesn't currently?
12. What do you consider the five most "telling" interests from the list on your profile? Why?
13. Do you have any unique interests on your user profile? What are they? How'd they get there?
14. Did you have a gateway fandom? Still in it? Why or why not? Is there a community for it on DW?
15. What's your current obsession? What about it captures your imagination?
16. What are you glad you did but haven't really had a chance to post about?
17. How many people on your reading list do you know IRL?
18. What don't you talk about here, either because it's too personal or because you don't have the energy?
19. Any questions from the audience?
20. Yes, but what are your thoughts on yaoi?
21. What's your favorite thing about Dreamwidth?
