Census day
Mar. 27th, 2011 03:35 pmI hadn't read the form beforehand. It's described as 32 pages, but most of that is 4 pages repeated for 6 people, so if there's only one of you it's effectively 12. That's still quite a lot.
There is room alongside the "Male" and "Female" boxes to add another, but since it's marked by computer (how does it turn the pages?) that probably won't be noticed. Also, I'm sure somebody pointed out the distinction between sex and gender when this was being designed, and was ignored.
I'd been warned about the religion question (No Religion, given what they use it for), which seems to be the only optional one. Needs subcategories, srsly.
Some questions I hadn't seen people discussing in advance: I decided to describe myself as "long-term sick or disabled". Their categories are very broad-brush and I'd already said I'm "slightly" restricted in my day-to-day activities. Am I on a government-funded training scheme? Well, I'm on one of those helping-you-back-to-work things - not nearly as time-consuming and unpleasant as the workfare I was on in '08 - but I'm not actually getting training, and after all the talk about funding for a relevant course it looks as if I'm not going to get it. So No.
The space to answer "Describe briefly what you do in your job / did in your last job" (or words to that effect) is far too short. I suppose I could have just put COMPUTER PROGRAMMING, which would fit in the space, but not in my definition of "describe", brief or otherwise.
