The thaw has started

or a thaw, anyway. There is still snow everywhere, where it hasn't been walked on/driven over/sanded enough to clear it. Today, I got the spade from the shed, so if it comes back and blocks the front gate from opening again, I've got something to dig my way out with.
The fetching of the spade from the shed was more of an effort than that might sound. Things I didn't get done include clearing the overhanging branches (of next door's tree) from the path. It turns out that my one-hand clippers aren't up to cutting them where they reach head height (they're not as sharp as when they were new, and stronger hands might also be useful), and shaking off the weight of snow and removing the parts that are thin enough to cut didn't make them spring back to a reasonable height, woe. So I'm having to bend down to get underneath while being rained on by the melt. My back is not pleased.
I was going to the shed in the first place to put some things in there that have been gathering dust on a shelf in the kitchen, which I've never used for anything but storage, but now I need to clear it to make room for a microwave.
Yesterday evening, I turned on the oven to cook some roast potatoes and use up some of the vege sausages from Thursday, and nothing happened. Panic! The rings are still working (at least, the ones I've tested are). My repertoire of things made from actual ingredients that don't involve the oven is mostly stew, which I'm not great at anyhow, so I was afraid I'd be living on soup and pasta (today, I thought of stir-fry, which I can chop up the saussies into). Seems like a good time to get my first microwave, since replacing a whole cooker would cost more, and not only in cash. So.
I found one I like the look of, from a manufacturer I've heard of, cheap, on $BIG-ELECTRICAL-RETAILER's website, but it says reservations aren't available, check in store. So I phoned this morning to find out whether they have one before getting a friend to drive me over, and it turns out it's only available by delivery, and apparently not till Xmas Eve. So I can avoid dragging my friend out after he gets back from work, but what will I eat till then/do with those left-overs? Oh, right! Stir-fry!
Indeed, it turns out that egg fried rice from the frozen food store + bits of vegetarian sausage works, so this plan is go.
Meanwhile, the woman on the phone at $BIG-ELECTRICAL-RETAILER this afternoon says it's "two to three working days", and they'll phone first thing in the morning on the day of delivery (as opposed to the day before as the chap this morning said).
So it might get here on Wednesday, which would be good. If not, can I buy food for Xmas assuming I'll have an oven to cook it in?
